Some Things

March is there already! My weeks have been full of sketching and drawing and painting and well, I’m certainly not complaining about that. It looks like I’m spending a lot of time on the Internet too though, since the list of links I want to share with you here is growing and growing. Here are some of the artsy ones:

  • Some interesting thoughts on doodling. In a word, I guess: don’t overthink it.
  • Something “fishy”. I’m always amazed when I come across the work of artists who can create something simple, beautiful, playful and useful and the same time. I guess there is something in Julia Castano’s work about being able to keep seeing the world through a child’s eyes. And the Artistic Moods blog is a really great place to find other artists that have this talent.
  • Speaking of seeing the world through a child’s eyes, Juliane is blogging again. Her work is wonderful! I love the way she gives life to the beautiful dolls she makes through her photos.
  • Something new in my inbox: Eileen, whose creative prompts really helped me get to work back in December, has just started a newsletter in which she shares what inspires her.

Have a great weekend!

Some Things

  • Something nice in the mail: a box of delicious home-made chocolates, courtesy of my awesome brother.
  • Something  I’m working on: a little academia-inspired valentine printable. (Here is the one I made last year).
  • Something to listen to: I’ve been catching up on While She Naps episodes. I found the one with Thomas Knauer about quilting really interesting. I also started listening to the Creative Pep Talk podcast. Warmly recommended! This and this episodes are my favorite so far.
  • Something inspiring: Nicole Smeltzer’s science illustrations, Rachel Grant’s collages, and Sophie Miller’s embroideries.

    Have a lovely weekend!

Some Things

Something brought home from the thrift store. I will finally be able to sew much-needed insulating curtains for this little red house.

And some things that inspired me this week:

Have a good weekend!

Some Things

candle

There are the little things: the candle on the breakfast table, the extra good orange juice. There is the snow outside and a roaring fire in the wood stove.

There are watercolors and paint brushes on my desk. It will be birches, birds and winter skies.

I will enjoy these things. Wholeheartedly.

There are also pills that are bitter to swallow. The past few days, I read posts in which parents were wondering what to tell their children. About the role of teachers. About how Trump won, and why politics is the solution.

There are also elections coming up next spring in France, my home country. Something in this article caught my attention because it sums up my point of view about the situation we French are facing:

Here is one story. Trump peeled off white working-class voters who had supported Obama. He did it in the classic style of the twenty-first-century right-wing nationalist, which he shares with France’s National Front and other Western European nationalist movements: offering a mix of white identity politics and economic populism to people who feel the traditional center-left party is offering them nothing.

Nothing.

So, I will paint and I will light candles, yes. And I will do by best to support the progressive forces that are struggling to be heard but working hard to offer something good.

snowy landscape || by marion

Something that’s certain: winter is here! With snowy trees and pale pink clouds.

pincushion || by marion

Something that’ll make my life easier. Made from whatever I had on hand: a linen square that used to cover a jar of jam, tiny fabric and yarn scraps for the stuffing, and just enough embroidery thread to learn how to make a new stitch. A snowy afternoon well spent.

starsnowflakes_lowred

Something in the mail. A package with a small batch of my holiday cards arrived from the printer’s this week. I was thrilled to finally see them! They are now available in my little shop.

And from around the web:

Something about patience. Found via Jen Snyder‘s newsletter, the creative digest. I also like listening to her podcast, Creating You Own Path.

Something about urban green spaces: I recently discovered this beautiful blog, Beyond the Window Box.

Have a nice weekend!

Autumn forest bouquet || heather and wild blueberry leaves || by marion

Something I brought home from a walk in the forest the other day.

And since it’s ‘back to school’ time, here are some posts about studies, life choices and career paths that I read and liked these past few weeks. I’d love to hear your thoughts, too.

Something about deciding what to do ‘when you grow up’, and learning to follow your heart instead of listening to people. In Sandra Juto‘s case, it meant that she became a very talented artist. How inspiring is that ?

In the same vein but in the science world, something to help rethink the ‘you can, therefore you must’ point of view that is so common in academia.

For those of you who can read Norwegian, I must say I also loved this post by Julie, who is a writer and literature student, on the same topic.

Have a good weekend!

Something I finally tried last weekend: weaving a rag rug! An awesome local weaving studio had an open doors event, so I jumped at the chance. I think I’m hooked!

Something that grows really well in my garden this year? Zucchini! I tried two different kinds: Striato d’Italia and Costata Romanesco. Both worked great, and they’re a good combination since the former started giving fruits in July while the later is ready now.

Some great things I stumbled upon via twitter (I’m @by_marion) this week:

Something to eat?

Something about a bird named Malawi.

Some things about creative introverts. Well, I identify with every single point. Do you?

Have a wonderful weekend!

Some Things

Red House In The Snow

Something our neighbors taught us: when nature gives you free insulation, pile it against the walls of your house.

Something critical about academia, made poetic. Found through matters mathematical, and very much agreed upon.

Something that got me thinking: “create to share” vs “share what you create”. Eileen’s blog is full of inspiring posts about illustration. I also enjoyed that one, for example.

Something animated,

and something from photographers I enjoy following: moments in black and white before morning coffee and after a short swim.

Have a cozy weekend.

Some Things

reindeer crossing the road

Something that happens a lot around here these days, as captured by my mom.

Something about 5 sisters. Made me laugh out loud. (Always does!)

Something about what home means, by the woman who married a bear.

Something about love, academic style: here‘s mine and here‘s a whole lot of other funny academic valentines.

Have a lovely weekend!
